The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has suffered another political setback following the defection of several of its members to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The defectors were received by the NDC senatorial candidate for Kano South, Dr Kassim Ibrahim Bataiya, during a political gathering in Takai Local Government Area of the state on Saturday.
The latest development comes amid a growing wave of political defections in Kano as parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.
There have been reports of several APC members moving to the NDC since former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, emerged as the party’s vice presidential candidate.
However, the political realignment has not been one-sided, as some politicians previously aligned with Kwankwaso have also reportedly defected to the ruling APC in recent weeks.
The series of defections has further heightened political tensions in Kano, a state expected to play a major role in the 2027 elections.
Political analysts have predicted a keenly contested election in the state, particularly as Kwankwaso and his former political ally and current Kano State Governor, Kabir Yusuf, appear set for a major political showdown.
With both camps seeking to consolidate their influence ahead of 2027, Kano’s political landscape is expected to remain highly competitive in the months leading to the election.
