Elders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) across Kwara State’s three senatorial districts have thrown their weight behind a power shift to Kwara North ahead of the 2027 governorship election, citing equity, justice, and fairness.
The party chieftains from Kwara South, Kwara North, and Kwara Central reached the consensus during a gathering in Ilorin, where Senator Sadiq Umar officially declared his intention to contest for governor in 2027.
The elders argued that since the return to democratic rule in 1999, the governorship seat has been dominated by the other two districts, leaving Kwara North marginalised despite its contributions to the state.
Chairman of Kwara South APC Elders Caucus, James Ayeni, described the call for power rotation as long overdue.
“It is the turn of Kwara North to produce the next governor. This is in the spirit of fairness, equity and justice,” he said.
Echoing similar sentiments, Kwara North elder, Ahmed Mohammed, urged residents across the state to support both the region’s agitation and its candidate, expressing confidence in the success of the movement.
From Kwara Central, elder statesman Ismail Agboola also aligned with the position, noting that the northern district has endured years of neglect and infrastructural deficits.
“We must allow one of their own to lead so as to drive development in the area. Justice and fairness must prevail,” he stated.
Declaring his ambition, Senator Umar—popularly known as 3SU—said his decision was driven by a shared vision to advance the state’s development.
“I formally declare my intention to contest for the office of governor in the 2027 general election under the platform of our great party,” he said.
The endorsement by APC elders is expected to shape political alignments in Kwara State as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
