Mystery Deepens as Woman and Daughter Disappear After Domestic Violence, Arson Incident in Yaba

Weeks after a disturbing case of domestic violence and arson in Yaba, Lagos, the whereabouts of Fatima Issa and her teenage daughter remain unknown.

The woman, who narrowly escaped death after her husband allegedly set their home ablaze, has not been seen since she was discharged from the hospital where she was receiving treatment for severe burns.

The incident occurred on February 10, 2024, at No. 65 Akinwunmi Street, Alagomeji. It was gathered that the violent attack followed the husband’s discovery that Fatima had been involved in a long-term same-sex relationship and had allegedly introduced their daughter to the act.

Fatima, a mother of two, was said to have endured years of neglect and abuse in her marriage, leading her to seek emotional and sexual connection elsewhere. Following the confrontation and a failed reconciliation, the husband allegedly carried out the arson while Fatima was asleep. She escaped the burning house through the kitchen, sustaining serious injuries in the process.

After the incident, Fatima was admitted to Almat Medical Centre, where she was treated for several burns. However, sources say she left the hospital under unclear circumstances and has not been heard from since. Her teenage daughter, who was reportedly staying with her at the time, has also vanished from public view.

Family members and neighbors have expressed concern over their disappearance. “We thought she would return after her treatment, but she just vanished,” a resident of the area said. “It’s troubling that no one has seen or heard from her or the girl since then.”

There has been widespread speculation over whether Fatima chose to go into hiding due to fear of public backlash, social stigma, or personal safety concerns. Her sudden disappearance has left more questions than answers.

This case has reignited conversations about the dangers women face in abusive marriages, the lack of support for victims of domestic violence, and the harsh societal treatment of individuals involved in same-sex relationships in Nigeria.

At present, Fatima’s fate — and that of her daughter — remains unknown.
