With the August 16 elections just days away, political intrigue in Ogun State has taken a dramatic turn as Governor Dapo Abiodun is alleged to be plotting to set up two influential transport union leaders — Efele and Danku — on charges of anti-party activity.
Rumours have been swirling in political circles and motor parks across the state that the two leaders, both heavyweights in the transport sector, have quietly begun shifting loyalty to another governorship aspirant.
Insiders say the union bosses are displeased with the APC’s choice of candidate, whom they claim was handpicked by the governor without consulting party stakeholders or weighing the popularity of other aspirants.
According to sources, Efele and Danku have been accused of mobilising their networks to work against the APC candidate in the bye-election, viewing the governor as a political force on the decline.
“They believe Abiodun’s tenure is almost over, and once he leaves office, he will no longer have the influence or resources to benefit them,” one political source confided.
In a twist that has deepened suspicion, Danku is said to have hosted a high-stakes meeting at his Sagamu GRA residence around 2 p.m. yesterday, allegedly bringing together a group of cultists from the area.
Notably, Ogun State’s Commissioner for Special Duties, Funmi Efuape — herself rumoured to be engaging in anti-party activities — was reportedly in attendance at the closed-door meeting.
The alleged mobilisation and the presence of key political figures at Danku’s residence have heightened speculation that Governor Abiodun is looking to build a case against the union leaders, potentially to neutralise their influence before election day.
Political watchers say the fallout between the governor and the union leaders, once seen as staunch allies, reflects the deepening cracks within the APC ahead of a crucial vote.
“This is no longer about loyalty; it’s about survival,” a party insider told our correspondent. “The union leaders are hedging their bets for the post-Abiodun era, and the governor is scrambling to keep them in line.”
As tension mounts, the Ogun State political scene is bracing for what could be a bitter, high-stakes showdown between the government, its former allies, and rival camps within the ruling party.
