The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) is fighting for its political life in its stronghold of Kano State. In a bold preemptive strike, the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) has dissolved its entire Kano executive structure, from state leadership down to the ward level.

The crisis reached a fever pitch on Friday following intelligence reports that the only sitting NNPP governor, Abba Yusuf, is allegedly preparing to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). This move is reportedly being resisted by the party’s National Leader and former governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Speaking on ARISE News on Sunday, January 4, 2026, the NNPP National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, defended the dissolution as a necessary move to restore constitutional order after “illegal” attempts were made to remove the state chairman.
Johnson confirmed that the party acted to stabilize its base after the Governor’s Director-General of Protocol reportedly suggested that both Yusuf and Kwankwaso were heading to the APC—a claim Kwankwaso has since denied.
“The party had to take preventative, pre-emptive action to ensure stability,” Johnson stated. He dismissed fears that the crackdown would accelerate the Governor’s exit, noting, “I do not believe anything we did would accelerate the action of the governor.”
With the 2027 electoral cycle heating up, Johnson emphasized that the NNPP cannot afford a “solo” faction. “This is 2026. We are going to have primaries this year, and election campaigns will begin later in the year. This is a time for parties to strengthen their bases.”
As caretaker committees prepare to take over Kano’s party affairs this coming week, the NNPP leadership remains in advanced negotiations with other political blocs, aiming for a unified front before a major national summit scheduled for late January or February.
