The Federal Government has approved ₦6 billion for the construction of three mega schools in Gombe State, as part of renewed efforts to strengthen education infrastructure in the North-East.
The approval was disclosed by the Minister of Regional Development, Alhaji Uba Ahmadu, during the inauguration of a 250-bed hostel built by the North East Development Commission (NEDC) in Kumo, headquarters of Akko Local Government Area.
Ahmadu said the mega schools, to be executed by the NEDC, would be strategically located across the state’s three senatorial districts—Dadin Kowa in Gombe Central, Dukku in Gombe North, and Kaltungo in Gombe South.
According to the minister, the initiative forms part of a broader federal strategy to make education more accessible, attractive and competitive, especially in regions impacted by years of infrastructural and developmental challenges.
“Education remains the most critical tool for catching up with national standards and bridging the educational gap between the North-East and other parts of the country,” Ahmadu said.
He added that the Federal Government is committed to providing modern learning environments that inspire students, enhance concentration and improve academic performance.
The minister noted that the mega schools would be equipped with essential facilities, including quality classrooms, ICT laboratories, libraries and decent student accommodation, creating a supportive atmosphere for effective learning.
Ahmadu also commended the Gombe State Government for its collaboration with the NEDC, describing the partnership as a model for sustainable educational development and regional growth.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), mega schools are large, state-driven educational complexes designed to improve learning outcomes through modern infrastructure. In Northern Nigeria, such projects are particularly targeted at providing safe and inclusive learning environments for thousands of students, including internally displaced persons (IDPs) and orphans.
The latest approval underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to rebuilding the education sector in the North-East and expanding opportunities for young learners across the region.
