Abia PDP Backs Tinubu for 2027, Declares Wike ‘Mainstream Leader’ Amid Party Tensions

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State, Amah Abraham, has dismissed claims of factionalisation within the party, insisting that what exists is a “mainstream” bloc led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Amah maintained that the PDP, in its current state, may not present a presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, noting that the party is leaning towards supporting incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He added that members who are dissatisfied with the party’s direction are free to explore other political platforms.

Amah’s comments come amid conflicting reports over the weekend suggesting that Wike’s camp had denied plans to back Tinubu’s re-election bid, insisting instead on fielding a candidate from within the PDP.

Rejecting narratives of division, the Abia PDP chairman urged the media to refrain from describing the situation as factional.

“This is the mainstream of the party, as recognised by law,” Amah said, stressing that Wike is not a factional figure but the legitimate leader of the PDP bloc acknowledged by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He further revealed that internal consultations are ongoing within the party’s National Executive Committee, with differing opinions on whether the PDP can still produce a viable presidential contender.

According to him, some party members believe there is no clear candidate capable of challenging President Tinubu, especially with the election drawing closer. Others, he noted, argue that the lingering crisis within the PDP has discouraged potential aspirants from stepping forward.

Amah concluded that, given the current realities, endorsing Tinubu for a second term may represent the most practical path forward for the party’s mainstream leadership.
