‘Age Is No Immunity’ — Sowore Calls for IBB’s Arrest Over Alleged Abuses

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has called for the arrest and prosecution of former military president, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, over alleged crimes committed during his administration.

Sowore made the call in a statement shared on his Facebook page, alleging that killings, human rights abuses, corruption and other grave violations remain unresolved from Babangida’s military regime.

He argued that Babangida’s age should not prevent authorities from investigating the allegations against him or prosecuting him where sufficient evidence is established.

Sowore cited the case of former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, who faced legal proceedings in his later years, to support his argument that age should not automatically shield former leaders from accountability.

“It is not too late to arrest and prosecute Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida for crimes committed under his military dictatorship,” Sowore stated.

He added that Babangida, who is 85, should not be granted immunity from justice because of his age.

According to him, the unresolved killings, abuses, corruption and other alleged violations associated with Babangida’s regime deserve proper investigation and prosecution where evidence supports such action.

In a related development, Sowore has promised to restore fuel subsidy if elected president in the 2027 general election.

The AAC candidate made the pledge during an interview on ARISE TV while discussing his proposed approach to addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges.

Asked whether he would reinstate fuel subsidy if elected, Sowore responded, “Absolutely.”

He argued that despite the removal of petrol subsidy, the Federal Government continues to subsidise other areas of the economy, including the naira.
