Rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, has dismissed claims that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is her political godfather, insisting instead that she regards him as her principal.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Yesufu explained that although she strongly supported Obi during the 2023 presidential election, she was never a member of the Labour Party.
According to the activist, her political journey began with the African Democratic Congress before she later aligned with the Nigerian Democratic Congress. She noted that her support for Obi was based on what she described as his empathy, patriotism, and commitment to improving Nigeria.
“Yes, I supported Peter Obi, but he is not my godfather. He is my principal,” she said during the interview.
Yesufu also revealed plans to transition fully from activism into politics, stating that her focus as a potential lawmaker would be ensuring accountability within the executive arm of government.
The outspoken activist said that if elected to represent the Federal Capital Territory in the Senate, she would resist approving what she termed unnecessary or frivolous loan requests from the presidency, regardless of who occupies the office.
She stressed that her loyalty would remain with Nigerians and the principles of transparency and accountability.
