Akume Seeks Stronger FG–Catholic Bishops Partnership for Peace, National Development

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to deepening collaboration with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) in advancing national development, peace, and social cohesion.

Akume made the pledge on Sunday while delivering a goodwill message at the CBCN First Plenary Meeting of 2026 held in Abuja.

Addressing Catholic bishops and clergy, the SGF described the gathering as a pivotal moment of reflection and pastoral guidance for both the Church and the country.

He expressed gratitude to the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria for the invitation, characterising the plenary as an important assembly of spiritual leaders shaping national discourse.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, Akume noted that beyond its administrative significance, the meeting provided an avenue to reflect on the spiritual and socio-economic challenges facing Nigerians.

He acknowledged the Catholic Church’s longstanding contributions to Nigeria’s moral and developmental landscape, commending its extensive network of schools, healthcare institutions, and humanitarian services.

According to him, the Church’s role in delivering education and medical care particularly to vulnerable communities remains monumental.

Highlighting prevailing economic and security concerns, Akume said Nigeria is at a defining moment, with citizens yearning for peace, justice, economic stability, and accountable leadership.

He praised the bishops’ consistent advocacy for good governance, national unity, and the sanctity of human life, noting that pastoral letters and communiqués issued by the CBCN often reflect the conscience of the nation and challenge leaders to uphold transparency and servant leadership.

Describing such interventions as patriotic and rooted in Gospel values rather than political opposition, Akume stressed the importance of bridging faith and governance to ensure public policies are guided by both administrative efficiency and moral integrity.

Reaffirming the readiness of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for constructive engagement, the SGF said the government remains committed to promoting interreligious harmony, youth empowerment, economic reform, and inclusive development.

“Justice, security of lives and property, and human dignity transcend political and denominational boundaries,” he stated, assuring the bishops that the Federal Government is focused on institutional strengthening and expanding social protection for the most vulnerable.

He concluded by expressing hope that the plenary deliberations would produce resolutions that strengthen evangelisation, deepen pastoral care, and contribute meaningfully to national stability and sustainable development, while commending the bishops for their steadfast leadership during challenging times.
