The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has dismissed rumours of a rift between him, Governor Seyi Makinde, and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, describing his relationship with both leaders as cordial.
Speaking to journalists in Oyo town on Tuesday, the monarch clarified that any issues, if they arise, would be addressed privately.
“I have nothing against the government. The governor has been very nice. If there is anything, I will meet him one-on-one and we will talk about it,” he said, attributing his recent absence at state functions to health reasons rather than conflict.
“There is no form of misunderstanding. I have a good relationship with my governor. I have been indisposed for some time, which is why I have been absent at state functions recently. But if there is a function, I will attend,” Oba Owoade added.
He also rejected claims of strained relations with the Olubadan, explaining that a recent handshake incident was misinterpreted. “I extended my hand to him, but he later explained that he did not see it. I don’t see it as an offence. After that incident, he called me, and we later met again at Aso Rock during an iftar. There is no misunderstanding between us.”
The Alaafin blamed social media bloggers for spreading false narratives and creating discord where none exists. “People peddling rumours about me; it is because of the throne. Bloggers create problems where there are none. It is part of the job,” he said, adding that he harbors no grievances against any individual or institution.
Oba Owoade also expressed gratitude to the media for their support and announced preparations for his upcoming birthday on July 18, when deserving individuals will be conferred with chieftaincy titles.
Reflecting on his first year on the throne, the monarch highlighted ongoing developmental efforts, including the establishment of a land dispute committee, the construction of a community health centre valued at N800 million, and renovation of the palace to preserve its heritage. Plans for a civic centre are also underway.
“The journey so far has been mixed, but we thank God for His guidance. Sitting on this throne, you expect a lot, and rumours are part of the reality. We remain committed to peace, unity, and tangible developments for Oyo,” he said.
Oba Owoade urged the public to disregard unfounded rumours and continue to support traditional institutions as drivers of stability and development.
