APC Unites Behind Yayi as Ogun 2027 Governorship Race Takes Shape

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State has concluded its governorship primaries, bringing an end to months of political consultations, speculation, and strategic negotiations. At the close of the exercise, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, emerged as the party’s standard-bearer for the 2027 governorship election.

The primary election, conducted across the state’s 20 local government areas, recorded impressive participation and was widely praised for its peaceful and orderly conduct. Unlike similar exercises in some states that have been marred by disputes and allegations of imposition, the Ogun APC primary proceeded without incidents of violence or major controversy.

Speaking after voting at Ward 3, Iperu 1 in Ikenne Local Government Area, Governor Dapo Abiodun said the outcome reflected months of extensive consultations among party leaders and stakeholders.

According to the governor, the APC adopted a consensus-building approach that involved engaging party leaders across wards, local governments, and state constituencies to identify candidates capable of leading the party to victory while preserving internal unity.

Abiodun revealed that over 700 aspirants initially expressed interest in various elective positions ahead of the 2027 elections. Through a rigorous screening and consultation process, the party narrowed the field while ensuring that those who were not selected remained integrated within the party structure.

The emergence of Adeola is being viewed as a major boost for the APC as it prepares for the next election cycle. Political observers note that his candidacy has generated broad acceptance across the state’s political divides, giving the ruling party a rare level of cohesion at a time when many parties are battling internal disagreements.

Known for his extensive grassroots network, Adeola has spent years cultivating political support across Ogun State through constituency projects, empowerment initiatives, educational interventions, healthcare programmes, and community engagement efforts. His visibility and accessibility have earned him strong support among youth groups, market associations, artisans, traditional institutions, and party stakeholders.

Many APC members believe his emergence represents continuity rather than disruption. Supporters argue that his administration would build upon the development agenda pursued by Governor Abiodun, particularly in infrastructure development, industrial expansion, agriculture, and investment promotion.

Projects such as the Gateway International Airport, road infrastructure upgrades, and industrial development initiatives have become key pillars of the state’s economic transformation. Stakeholders believe Adeola’s experience at the National Assembly and his understanding of federal budgeting and intergovernmental relations could help Ogun attract additional investments and federal partnerships.

Beyond governance considerations, Adeola’s candidacy carries significant political symbolism for Ogun West. The senatorial district, predominantly populated by the Yewa/Awori people, has long advocated for greater representation in the state’s highest political office. Many leaders from the region see his emergence as a historic opportunity to address longstanding concerns about political inclusion.

However, analysts emphasize that Adeola’s appeal extends beyond regional considerations. His political network spans Ogun Central and Ogun East, positioning him as a candidate capable of building a statewide coalition ahead of the general election.

Despite the APC’s current unity, challenges remain. The party must convert post-primary goodwill into electoral success while managing the expectations of aspirants who stepped aside during the consensus process. Political observers note that sustained reconciliation efforts and inclusive campaign structures will be critical in maintaining party cohesion.

The opposition, particularly the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is also expected to mount a strong challenge in key areas of the state. As a result, Adeola’s campaign is expected to focus heavily on issues such as youth employment, economic growth, support for small businesses, digital infrastructure, and improved public service delivery.

Governor Abiodun commended party members for embracing the consensus arrangement, insisting that no aspirant was pressured to withdraw. He described the process as a demonstration of democratic maturity and praised the state APC leadership for ensuring transparent and peaceful primaries.

At Ward 3, Iperu 1, Returning Officer Dr. Femi Akinbile announced that out of 837 registered party members, 832 were accredited to vote. Adeola secured 829 votes, with similar outcomes recorded in several other wards across the state.

With the primaries concluded, attention now shifts to the broader electoral contest. The coming months will determine whether the APC can translate internal consensus into widespread voter support. For now, however, the party appears united behind a candidate whose emergence has positioned it strongly for the 2027 governorship race.

As Ogun prepares for another electoral cycle, Adeola’s challenge will be convincing voters that continuity, inclusiveness, and accelerated development offer the best path forward for the state.
