Bayelsa in Mourning: Governor Diri Laments Loss of ‘Elder Statesman’ Senator John Kojo-Brambaifa

YENAGOA, BAYELSA STATE – Governor Douye Diri has officially expressed deep grief over the passing of Senator John Kojo-Brambaifa, a titan of Bayelsa politics and a distinguished former representative of the Bayelsa West Senatorial District.
The elder statesman died on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at an Abuja hospital following a brief illness. He was 81 years old. In a somber condolence message released on Monday, January 5, Governor Diri described the late Senator as an “illustrious son” whose career spanned the very foundation of the state.
“Bayelsa and Nigeria have lost an elder statesman, amiable gentleman, astute politician, and a great community leader,” Diri stated through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah. “Brambaifa left a legacy of unblemished and committed service to Nigeria, the old Rivers State, and Bayelsa.”
Until his passing, Senator Brambaifa was actively serving as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Agriculture, Bassambiri. His extensive political resume included:
