The staff of an FM station operating in Kano, WAZOBIA/Cool FM, have accused the radio station of producing programmes promoting obscenity, use of vulgar language and music content that allegedly breached the codes of the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission, NBC.
They also alleged that the programmes contravened Islamic laws and denigrate the moral values of the host society.
About 50 staff of the station were earlier sacked for raising objections to the breaches, and insisting that 65 percent of the radio content should reflect the norms and values of the host community as expected by the NBC.
A spokesperson for the affected workers, Sulaiman Gama, however alleged that the station was promoting indecency and prostitution as male and female staff were sheltered within the office complex “in a brothel-like manner”.
In a letter signed by the affected staffers, they urged government to investigate various cases of arbitrary termination of indigenous employees without recourse to due process, as well as the infringement on their rights and privileges of employees.
They also alleged that the station management compelled the employees to sign contractual agreements making employees to forfeit their right to belong to professional trade unions.
They said such action negated the provision of freedom of association as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.
According to them, the station also violated the federal character principles, which they said allow for at least 60 percent of the organizational workforce to be allocated to the host community.
Contacted, a management staff of the radio station, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the state anti-corruption commission had asked the company not to speak on the matter as they were still investigating the case.
