On the 29th of December, 2014 a federal high court sitting in Lagos via the suit no: FHC/L/CS/1987/14 gave an injunction prohibiting Cynthia Morgan who is an artiste under the label of North side Entertainment Ltd (owned by Jude Engees Okoye).
The court banned all other Dj’s, radio stations, agents, TV stations, bloggers and every other person from publishing and distributing to the public, the music track/single/album titled POPORI by Cynthia Morgan which is an infringement on Queen Ure’s copyright.
Reports show that the court empowers Queen Ure to sue anyone in the business of recording, publishing and distributing to the public the music track PORPORI which is an infringement of her copyright.
Queen Ure released her first PORPORI video back in 2012, ad her 15 track album which she launched Dec 29 2012 was also titled PORPORI, she dropped another PORPORI video March 2014. On releasing the video she had the sound recording registered at the Nigerian Copyright Commission and a copyright certificate was issued to her in March 2013.
In November 2014, Cynthia Morgan released her single titled POPORI which the court has ordered her to relinquish the use of POPORI as the title of her single.
Cynthia Morgan reacted with a tweet saying she does not know who Queen Ure is, and that Google has no information on her.
Queen Ure also came out to state that what she did was nothing she did was personal and that she was just preserving and protecting her intellectual property as well as her contribution to the music industry.
According to her this way artistes can begin to respect each others’ work and to start appreciating the act of registering their work so they can protect themselves in case of infringement.
It is worthy of note however to know that Cynthia Morgan’s single is titled POPORI, while Queen Ure’s track and album is titled PORPORI, which means they only sound alike, but they are not spelled the same way…
