The Federal Government has expanded broadband access to nine underserved Local Government Areas (LGAs) across the country through Galaxy Backbone Limited, in a move aimed at deepening digital inclusion and strengthening national connectivity.

The initiative, executed under Project 774, is designed to reinforce Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and ensure inclusive access to reliable internet services in rural and previously unconnected communities.

Investigations reveal that the connectivity rollout will provide thousands of residents in the affected LGAs with improved internet access, opening opportunities for digital marketing, online education, and economic empowerment.

The expansion comes two years after President Bola Tinubu appointed Prof. Ibrahim Adeyanju as Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Galaxy Backbone, a period the agency describes as transformative for Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.

In a statement signed by the company’s Head of Corporate Communications, Mr. Chidi Okpala, the agency said the impact of its interventions now extends across universities, airports, and federal institutions.

“This initiative extends digital access to communities that previously lacked reliable internet. It reflects our ongoing mission to build Nigeria’s digital backbone and support socio-economic development,” Okpala said.

Among the major milestones recorded in the past two years is the completion of Fibre-to-Hostel projects at the University of Lagos, University of Abuja, and University of Jos, significantly enhancing research capacity and digital learning environments.

Strategic national infrastructure, including the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and Federal Secretariats, have also been integrated into the improved connectivity framework to boost operational efficiency.

Okpala further highlighted Galaxy Backbone’s partnership with the West Indian Ocean Cable Company (WIOCC), which has strengthened Nigeria’s fibre backbone, improved redundancy, and enabled scalable broadband expansion to additional states and communities.

Beyond physical infrastructure, the agency has enhanced sovereign digital capabilities through its 1Government Cloud platform, supporting Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) with secure hosting and shared services. Its locally developed GovMail solution now serves over 100,000 federal civil servants.

Galaxy Backbone also reported upgrades in cybersecurity monitoring, co-location services, data centre operations, and the establishment of a 24/7 Service Desk to support stakeholders nationwide.

According to the company, it has received over 20 national and international awards in recognition of its innovation and service delivery.

Okpala reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to Nigeria’s digital transformation under the Renewed Hope Agenda and commended the support of the Minister of Communications, Innovations and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani.

He assured that Galaxy Backbone would continue to expand connectivity, strengthen cybersecurity, and build a resilient digital foundation for the country’s future.
