The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Tanimu Turaki, SAN, has announced that former President Goodluck Jonathan will be screened tomorrow, Tuesday, as the party’s sole presidential candidate.

A 14-member committee has been constituted to oversee Jonathan’s screening. The panel includes former Vice-President Namadi Sambo, ex-Plateau State Governor Jonah Jang, and former Foreign Minister Tom Ikimi. Other notable members are Chief Olabode George, Babangida Aliyu, Maryam Ciroma, Zainab Maina, Josephine Anenin, Dr. Abdul Bulama, Dr. Esther Uduehi, Edo State PDP Chairman Tony Aziegbemi, Dr. Sunday Solarium, and Chief Anicho Okoro, who will serve as administrative secretary.

Although the PDP statement described Jonathan simply as a “lone presidential aspirant,” inquiries by THISDAY confirmed that he remains the only presidential contender for the party.

Last week, PDP National Publicity Secretary Ini Ememobong confirmed that Jonathan successfully registered in the party’s digital membership exercise, as mandated by INEC.

The Turaki-led faction of the PDP, backed by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, also announced plans to screen 748 House of Representatives candidates, 198 senatorial aspirants, 112 governorship candidates, and 2,122 state assembly aspirants nationwide. The exercise begins at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.

Meanwhile, former Deputy Governor of Imo State, Prince Eze Madumere, has pledged to secure victory in the 2027 senatorial elections for Owerri Zone. He emphasized his extensive political network, experience, and dedication to youth empowerment and socio-economic development.

“The people know me. They know my track record and what I stand for—equity and justice. With the support of our party faithful and the people of Owerri Zone, victory is assured,” Madumere stated.

The PDP confirmed that the screening exercise aligns with the party’s official timetable and guidelines for the 2027 general elections.
