Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has formally nominated Murtala Sule Garo as the new deputy governor, forwarding his name to the State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation.
The nomination follows the resignation of former deputy governor Aminu Gwarzo on March 27, 2026, a move that came amid escalating political tensions and looming impeachment proceedings initiated by the state legislature. Gwarzo had faced allegations ranging from gross misconduct and abuse of office to breach of public trust and financial mismanagement.
In an official statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, Governor Yusuf explained that the nomination complies with constitutional provisions. He cited Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which grants governors the authority to appoint a replacement when the office of deputy governor becomes vacant.
The governor emphasized that the decision was reached after wide consultations with key political stakeholders across the state, urging lawmakers to expedite the confirmation process.
Garo, a seasoned political figure, brings over two decades of administrative and grassroots experience to the role. His career includes positions such as State Organizing Secretary, Special Adviser to the Governor, Chairman of Kabo Local Government, Chairman of ALGON Kano, and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. He also previously contested as the APC’s deputy governorship candidate in the 2023 general elections.
Governor Yusuf expressed confidence that Garo’s appointment would reinforce governance structures and ensure continuity in delivering effective public service across Kano State.
