BENIN CITY—A medical doctor abducted in Auchi, Edo State, Dr Tahir Abu, has regained his freedom after his family paid a ransom of N50 million to his captors. The release comes after a tragic ordeal in which his younger brother was killed by the kidnappers.

Dr Abu and his brother were kidnapped on January 2 from their residence along City Pride Road, Igbira Camp, Auchi, sparking widespread concern within the community.

Confirming the development, the father of the victim disclosed that the ransom was paid in two instalments of N20 million and N30 million before his son was released on Wednesday morning at about 8 a.m.

According to him, the ransom was raised through collective efforts involving family members, donations from non-governmental organisations, friends, and other well-wishers.

“My son has been released by the kidnappers after we paid N50 million. I feel relieved that he is safe, but I also mourn the loss of another son,” the grieving father said.

He added that Dr Abu sustained a gunshot graze during the ordeal and is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital.

The Edo State Police Command confirmed the release of the victim. The Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, said on Thursday that Dr Abu had regained his freedom, although details surrounding the arrest of the suspects were not immediately disclosed.

The incident has once again highlighted growing concerns over kidnapping and insecurity in parts of Edo State and across the country.
