The Labour Party (LP) has gained a major political boost with the defection of Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, the House of Representatives member representing Aba North/South Federal Constituency.
Kaduna State LP Chairman, Eld. Dr. Yusuf Solomon Danbaki, described the move as a turning point for the party, coming days after Ikwechegh resigned from APGA. Danbaki credited the party’s renewed stability to National Chairman, Esther Nenadi Usman, and Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, whose leadership has restored credibility and unity.
Ikwechegh’s defection follows a strategic meeting with Governor Otti, reflecting his alignment with LP’s people-centered agenda. Danbaki said the move signals a reversal for a party that suffered major setbacks post-2023 elections, losing several Senators and House members to defections, court rulings, and other disruptions.
“The tide began to turn with the Supreme Court’s affirmation of Sen. Nenadi Usman as National Chairman, restoring stability and credibility,” Danbaki said. He noted that Usman’s inclusive approach and Otti’s successful governance model in Abia State have not only stemmed losses but now attracted gains, with Ikwechegh’s defection marking a new era of confidence.
The state chairman also extended an invitation to former LP members to return, urging unity to rebuild a party focused on workers’ welfare, anti-corruption, and national progress.
“This defection is more than a political shift; it’s a testament to LP’s enduring appeal. With Usman and Otti steering the party, the door is open for all former members to join in building a working Nigeria for all,” he said.
The development positions the Labour Party to consolidate its base ahead of upcoming elections, reinforcing its message of unity and effective governance.
