Veteran Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has shared candid advice for couples navigating resistance from a partner’s family, urging patience, effort and careful reflection before committing to marriage under hostile circumstances.

Speaking during an interview on The Morayo Show, the actress encouraged individuals to make sincere attempts to build understanding and trust with disapproving relatives.

“As an Omotola, I would advise that if the family of your spouse doesn’t like you, try everything you possibly can to make them understand you,” she said.

“However, there are some parents who are simply determined not to like you.”

Prejudice and Preconceived Notions
Omotola noted that early opposition often stems from preconceived biases, including ethnic background or deeply held personal opinions.

“They already have prejudices. They’ve decided maybe they don’t like you because you’re from a particular place in Nigeria or the world, or they already have their own opinions,” she said.

While she acknowledged that some families may eventually have a change of heart, she warned that such shifts can be uncertain.

‘Support Is Crucial’
The screen icon emphasised that marriage is already demanding without the added strain of family hostility.

“Marriage in itself is already an institution where you’re going to face a lot. It’s a lifetime journey,” she said.

Omotola advised couples to think critically before entering unions where persistent opposition exists, stressing that support systems are essential for navigating the inevitable challenges of married life.

“Why start with people that already have something against you? Every step of the way you’re going to need support. If they’re not going to support you from the beginning, you’re going to have a very rough journey,” she added.

She concluded by encouraging couples to weigh their choices carefully, noting that while love is important, a strong foundation of support can make the journey smoother.
