Mastermind Unmasked: Nigerian Military Identifies Kingpin Behind Deadly Maiduguri Mosque Bombing

In a major breakthrough for national security, the Nigerian military has unmasked Shariff Umar(also known as ‘Yusuf’) as the suspected principal coordinator of a lethal suicide bombing network operating across the North-East.

The identification follows a high-stakes intelligence operation by the Joint Task Force North East, Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), which led to the arrest of 14 suspects during a New Year’s Eve sweep in the Kalmari area of Maiduguri on December 31, 2025.
According to a statement released on Saturday, January 3, 2026, by Media Information Officer Lt. Col. Sani Uba, investigations have successfully mapped the operational hierarchy of the cell.
A detained suspect, Ibrahim Muhammad, reportedly provided “unequivocal” evidence during interrogation, naming Umar as the ringleader. Umar’s alleged roles included:
A Family Affair in Terror
The military’s investigation revealed that the network extended into Umar’s personal life. His wife, Yagana Modu, has been implicated in the cell’s activities, while his stepdaughter, Amina, confirmed to authorities that she had seen the suicide bombers within their shared residence.
Ongoing Operations
“All suspects remain firmly in custody and are undergoing intensive, multi-layered investigations,” Lt. Col. Uba stated. The current objective of the OPHK is to fully dismantle the network’s remaining logistical assets and recover any hidden explosives.
The military has urged residents of the North-East to break the “silence of fear” and continue providing timely information. They emphasized that terrorist networks can only survive by exploiting the silence of the communities they hide within.
