Nigerians at Home Better Off Than Many Abroad, Says Presidency

The Presidency has said that many Nigerians who believe they are struggling at home may still be in a better position than some of their counterparts who relocated abroad in search of greener pastures.

Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, made the remarks during an appearance on The Morayo Podcast Show on Wednesday.

According to Bwala, a significant number of Nigerians who migrated to countries such as the United Kingdom after earning university degrees in Nigeria have ended up taking low-paying jobs despite obtaining additional qualifications.

He noted that many Master’s degree and Ph.D. holders now work in care homes, warehouses and other menial occupations, arguing that such experiences challenge the widespread belief that relocating abroad automatically guarantees a better life.

Bwala, who said he is a resident of the United Kingdom, described the situation as a form of “modern-day slavery.”

He said many Nigerian graduates who earned first-class or second-class degrees and later obtained additional qualifications abroad are still employed in care homes.

According to him, the reality faced by some migrants is far from the expectations they had before leaving Nigeria, adding that the nature of such jobs often involves responsibilities that are more demanding than those traditionally associated with domestic work.
