Obi Meets Kwankwaso in Kano, Sparks Alliance Talks Amid Sallah Celebration

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, on Sunday visited former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, in a move that has intensified speculation about a possible political realignment ahead of future elections.

The meeting, held at Kwankwaso’s residence on Miller Road in Kano, was attended by several prominent figures, including Seyi Makinde, Seriake Dickson, and activist Naajatu Mohammed.

The high-level gathering has triggered political speculation, with observers suggesting that Kwankwaso could be weighing a potential move from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a shift that could reshape alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.

Addressing supporters during the annual Kwankwassiya Sallah festival, Obi downplayed political interpretations of the visit, stating that his primary purpose was to celebrate the Sallah festivities and honour Kwankwaso.

“I’m here to felicitate with you on the occasion of Sallah and to pay my respect,” Obi said, adding that the day was about celebration rather than politics.

However, he used the occasion to outline his vision for Kano’s economic revival, stressing the need to restore the state’s once-thriving industrial base. He referenced key industrial hubs such as Bompai and Sharada, as well as legacy institutions like the Bank of the North, which he said should be revitalised.

“We want to build a new Kano and bring back its economic strength,” Obi said.

The visit underscores a broader effort by Obi and his allies to reconnect with northern stakeholders and reaffirm their commitment to economic development, while strengthening ties with influential political figures in the region.

In his remarks, Kwankwaso welcomed the dignitaries, expressing delight at the gathering and describing it as a demonstration of unity and shared celebration during the festive season.
