Nollywood actor Olumide Oworu has shed light on his decision to step away from the movie spotlight and into the political arena, saying his move was driven by concern over Nigeria’s direction and the urgent need for effective policymaking.

Speaking during a recent interview on Naija FM, the actor said deteriorating governance has had a direct impact on his life and future plans, compelling him to take action rather than remain a bystander.

“I decided to join politics because of how the country is going,” Oworu said.

“I know how Nigeria was when I was younger, but now things keep getting worse. I want to start a family and raise my kids here.”

According to him, becoming part of the policymaking process is not just an ambition but a necessity. He stressed that the laws and policies enacted today will ultimately shape the realities he and millions of other young Nigerians will face tomorrow.

“I have to make sure I try my best to be among the policymakers because whatever policy is enacted will ultimately affect me like every other common person,” he explained.

Oworu also pointed to what he described as a generational gap in leadership, noting that many current political office holders are advanced in age, yet their decisions will disproportionately impact younger citizens.

“Most of the present crop of politicians are aging out, and whatever policy they are making today, my friends and I will be at the receiving end tomorrow,” he added.

In 2023, Oworu took a bold step into active politics by contesting for a seat in the Lagos State House of Assembly under the Labour Party. However, he lost the election to incumbent lawmaker Desmond Elliott.

Despite the setback, Oworu’s remarks suggest his political ambitions remain rooted in a long-term vision: ensuring that his generation has a voice in shaping Nigeria’s future.
