OPay has firmly rejected a circulating social media claim that the fintech company has stopped accepting customers’ phone numbers as account numbers.
The rumour, which spread across platforms, urged users whose OPay accounts are tied to their mobile numbers to visit agents and convert them to conventional bank account numbers.
The claim originated from an X post by user Israel Gharee, who wrote: “OPay is no longer using phone numbers as account numbers. They’re now issuing standard account numbers, so if you’re still using your phone number as your OPay account number, hurry to an OPay agent to get yours updated.”
When contacted by Premium Times, an OPay official speaking on condition of anonymity dismissed the assertion as inaccurate. The official noted that any significant changes to the company’s account system would be communicated exclusively through official channels.
“I have seen the tweet. But even from the comments, you will see people are already correcting him. If we have any update or news, we will always share through our communication channels,” the official stated on Sunday.
The clarification comes weeks after OPay reassured customers that its services remain fully operational, after another viral report falsely claimed the platform would shut down operations from 1 September 2026.
