The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has been summoned to appear either personally or through legal representation before the Oyo State High Court sitting in Oyo Town, following a suit instituted by some princes of Oyo Kingdom.

The claimants — Ladigbolu Adegboyega, Owoade Tesleem, Adeyemi Adesina and Adeyemi Adebayo — filed the action under suit number HOY/18/2026, challenging certain conducts allegedly linked to the revered monarch.

In the originating summons, the princes are seeking a perpetual injunction restraining the Alaafin, whether acting directly or through agents, associates or any third party, from attending or participating in events deemed incompatible with the dignity, status and prestige of the traditional head of the Yoruba race.

They further urged the court to restrain the monarch from performing any traditional or official function that may place him in a position of subordination to any other monarch within Yorubaland.

Beyond the injunctive reliefs, the claimants are asking the court to make far-reaching declaratory pronouncements on the historical and cultural significance of the Alaafin stool, currently occupied by Oba Owoade, across Yorubaland, Nigeria, West Africa and the global Yoruba diaspora.

Among the declarations sought is a judicial affirmation that the Alaafin of Oyo remains “the symbol of unity, togetherness and the pivotal holder of the cultural, customary and traditional heritage of the Yoruba people.”

The princes are also requesting a declaration that the Alaafin is the paramount ruler and appointing authority over all chieftaincies in Oyo Town, as well as Oyo North and Oyo South.

The matter has been fixed for hearing, with the court expected to determine the constitutional, cultural and traditional questions raised in the suit.
