Papa Ajasco Dispute: Wale Adenuga Breaks Silence on Abiodun Ayoyinka’s Viral Claims

The Chairman and Executive Producer of Wale Adenuga Productions, Wale Adenuga, has responded to the recent viral outburst by Abiodun Ayoyinka, best known for his role as Papa Ajasco in the long-running sitcom Papa Ajasco and Company.

In a measured reaction aimed at correcting public misconceptions, Adenuga said his initial impression of the trending video was that Ayoyinka had simply extended the comedic persona of Papa Ajasco into real life.

“My first impression when I watched the Papa Ajasco video now trending on the internet and local TV channels was: ‘Okay, so this guy has taken Papa Ajasco comedy into the public space!’ It is all well and good. I am happy for him, as his money-making strategy using social media has apparently worked,” he said.

Adenuga acknowledged Ayoyinka’s contribution to the show, describing him as a talented and versatile actor who closely resembles the original Papa Ajasco character he created in 1976.

He, however, expressed concern over what he described as misinformation and emotional reactions that followed Ayoyinka’s recent media interview, stressing the need to set the record straight.

According to Adenuga, Ayoyinka, a retired civil servant who served the Lagos State Government for over three decades, had a stable career outside acting. He noted that the production team often sought official permission from his workplace before engaging him for filming.

The producer also refuted claims by Ayoyinka that he had never owned a car or house, stating that the actor had benefitted from multiple vehicles over the years, including a Mercedes-Benz, and owns a house in Ogun State to the best of his knowledge.

On the issue of brand usage, Adenuga clarified that Ayoyinka cannot independently use the Papa Ajasco name for personal ventures due to copyright protections. He explained that such measures are necessary to preserve the integrity and reputation of the brand.

“He has not been barred from accepting advert jobs. As he himself stated, all that is required is to seek official approval from WAP. This is part of brand protection,” he said.

Adenuga further questioned Ayoyinka’s claims of financial struggles, pointing out that actors on the show typically spend only about six weeks a year on set, leaving ample time to pursue other opportunities.

He added that several other cast members—including Pa James, Mama Ajasco, Boy Alinco, Miss Pepeiye, Akpan, and Oduma—actively take on roles outside the production under their personal identities.

The veteran producer reaffirmed that Papa Ajasco and Company continues to air on major platforms, including NTA, STV, WAPTV, and YouTube, maintaining its legacy as one of Nigeria’s most enduring comedy series.

He concluded by emphasizing that Wale Adenuga Productions has consistently upheld industry standards, ensuring cordial relationships with its artistes and fulfilling all financial obligations as due.
