Former Super Eagles captain and 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winner, Segun Odegbami, has charged the Nigerian national team to convert their vast individual talent into collective dominance by embracing confidence and self-belief.
In a video message shared on the Super Eagles’ official X handle on Friday, the Nigerian football icon described belief as the defining factor in high-level international football, insisting that marginal differences often decide matches.
“It is about confidence, it is about belief that you can do it. The difference between football in countries is not much. What makes you win is often very small,” Odegbami said.
He noted that victories can hinge on a single moment of brilliance, luck, or an opponent’s error, but stressed that the most critical ingredient remains mental strength.
“There are so many factors that come into winning, but the most important one is confidence and self-belief,” he added.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s rich football history, Odegbami maintained that the Super Eagles possess a depth of talent capable of intimidating any African opponent. He highlighted the consistent rise of Nigerian stars, from past generations to the current crop leading the team.
“With the quality that we have, with our history and the numbers that we have, no country in Africa should be struggling with us,” he said.
Pointing to recent African Footballer of the Year winners such as Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, Odegbami also paid tribute to legends like John Mikel Obi and Jay-Jay Okocha, noting that many exceptional Nigerian players never won the continental honour — evidence of Nigeria’s football depth.
As the Super Eagles continue their AFCON campaign, Odegbami urged the players to compete with conviction rather than fear, insisting that true champions win by merit, not chance.
“They should play confidently, without fear, and play like champions. When you do that, you more often than not win — and you win deservedly,” he said.
The three-time African champions will face Algeria in a highly anticipated AFCON quarter-final clash in Marrakesh, Morocco, on Saturday, with Odegbami’s rallying call adding inspiration ahead of the decisive encounter.
