The meeting, chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, commenced at about 2:15 p.m. upon the President’s arrival at the Council Chamber. The deliberation was held in line with provisions of the Police Act 2020, which mandates the Police Council to consider and approve the appointment of the Inspector-General of Police.
The Police Council comprises the President as Chairman, all 36 state governors, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and the Inspector-General of Police.
Among top government officials present were Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and Head of the Civil Service of the Federation Didi Walson-Jack.
Governors of Enugu, Nasarawa, Ogun, Kwara, Plateau, Ondo, and Lagos states attended the meeting, alongside the Deputy Governor of Kogi State. Ministers of the Federal Capital Territory, Police Affairs, and Interior were also in attendance.
With the Council’s approval, Disu now assumes office as the nation’s substantive police chief, marking a new phase in the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.
