The Senate of Nigeria on Wednesday screened tax and fiscal policy expert Taiwo Oyedele for the position of Minister of State for Finance following his nomination by Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The screening followed a formal request by the president asking the upper legislative chamber to confirm Oyedele as a replacement for Doris Uzoka-Anite in the role.

In a separate request, the president also asked the Senate to confirm former lawmaker Magnus Abe as chairman of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).

Both requests were contained in separate letters read during plenary by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio.

In the correspondence, President Tinubu urged lawmakers to consider and approve Oyedele’s nomination as part of ongoing adjustments within the Federal Executive Council (Nigeria).

Before his nomination, Oyedele served as chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, where he spearheaded initiatives aimed at overhauling Nigeria’s tax system.

The 50-year-old economist, accountant, and public policy expert hails from Ikaram in the Akoko area of Ondo State.

Oyedele also built an extensive career in the private sector, spending 22 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). He joined the global consulting firm in 2001 and rose through the ranks to become Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader before his appointment to the presidential tax reform committee.
