Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has dismissed fresh claims surrounding the death of former military Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, describing the account as misleading and lacking credible evidence.
Sani made the remark in a post on X while reacting to claims by former Assistant Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Dennis Amachree, in his newly released memoir, DSS @40: My Journey Behind the Shield.
Amachree claimed that Abacha died of cardiac arrest during an intimate encounter with his girlfriend at the Presidential Villa in Abuja at about 4:05 a.m. in June 1998.
Reacting, Shehu Sani said the account was based on a literary narrative rather than verifiable evidence.
“The claim on circumstances surrounding Abacha’s death is misleading. The author couldn’t provide any convincing evidence other than literary narrative. It should be ignored,” he wrote.
Amachree served as Assistant Director of Operations and Intelligence at the DSS Lagos Command when Abacha died in June 1998.
Abacha ruled Nigeria from 1993 until his death on June 8, 1998, and the circumstances surrounding his passing have remained a subject of public debate for decades.
