Son Reveals Why Mike Ejeagha Was Buried Within 24 Hours of Death

The eldest son of the late veteran highlife musician, Mike Ejeagha, has revealed the reason behind the swift burial of the music legend, who was laid to rest just 24 hours after his passing.

The iconic “Gwo Gwo Gwo” crooner died on the night of Friday, June 6, 2025, at the age of 95. He was buried the following day, Saturday, June 7, in his hometown of Umuagba, Imezi-Owa, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Speaking on Sunday, his son, Emmanuel Ejeagha, said the family’s decision to bury the musician so quickly was in fulfillment of his final wish.

“My father specifically instructed me, as his first son, that he should not be embalmed after death,” Emmanuel said. “He was very clear on this. He told us he wanted to be laid to rest within 24 hours.”

Emmanuel explained that after confirming his father’s passing, he convened a meeting with members of the family and their kindred to communicate the deceased’s wishes.

He also informed the Enugu State Government, including Governor Peter Mbah, who gave their support. “There are serious consequences when the wish of an elder is ignored,” Emmanuel noted.

“We all agreed it was only right to honour his last request.” He added that a formal funeral ceremony for the late music icon would be announced in due course.

Mike Ejeagha was a towering figure in Nigerian highlife music, renowned for blending storytelling with cultural wisdom through music.

His works have influenced generations of musicians and remain a staple in Igbo folklore.”
