Spain has etched its name into football history by becoming the first nation to simultaneously hold the FIFA Men’s World Cup and FIFA Women’s World Cup titles.
The historic achievement was confirmed by FIFA on Sunday after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final in New York to lift the men’s trophy.
Celebrating the milestone, FIFA announced on its official X account: “History-makers Spain have become the first nation to hold both the @FIFAWorldCup and @FIFAWWC simultaneously!”
Spain’s latest triumph comes three years after its women’s national team claimed its maiden FIFA Women’s World Cup title with a 1-0 victory over England in the 2023 final in Sydney, Australia. Olga Carmona scored the decisive goal that secured the historic win.
The 2026 success also marked Spain’s second FIFA Men’s World Cup title, having previously won the tournament in South Africa in 2010.
By adding the 2026 men’s crown to its status as reigning women’s world champions, Spain has achieved a feat unmatched in the history of international football since FIFA introduced separate men’s and women’s World Cup competitions.
The remarkable accomplishment underscores Spain’s growing dominance on the global football stage. Beyond holding both World Cup titles, the country’s men’s team also won the UEFA European Championship in 2024, while the women’s side has continued to establish itself as one of the world’s leading teams following its breakthrough World Cup victory in Australia and New Zealand.
