Kano State was gripped by tension on Monday as heavy security presence enveloped the Government House amid widespread speculation that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf may be planning to defect from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Security operatives drawn from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) were seen in large numbers at strategic locations within and around the Government House, as well as on major access roads leading to the seat of power.
A correspondent observed a convoy of security vehicles, including Armoured Personnel Carriers and several police and DSS Hilux vans, reinforcing checkpoints and tightening access control to the area — a development that heightened anxiety across the state capital.
Although neither the state government nor the security agencies issued an official explanation for the unusual deployment, the buildup coincided with growing political speculation that Governor Yusuf could be on the verge of defecting to the APC.
The rumoured defection has sparked intense political conversations across Kano, with party loyalists and observers closely watching developments around the Government House.
Governor Yusuf, who was elected in 2023 on the platform of the NNPP, ended the APC’s hold on power in Kano and returned the Kwankwasiyya political movement to the state’s leadership after years in opposition. His victory was largely credited to the NNPP’s strong grassroots mobilisation and the influence of the party’s national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Since taking office, Yusuf’s administration has been locked in fierce political rivalry with the APC, particularly over control of political structures and governance narratives in the state.
In the past, the NNPP has repeatedly dismissed defection rumours involving the governor as unfounded and politically motivated. However, the latest speculation has gained momentum amid ongoing political realignments nationwide, as the APC seeks to consolidate power ahead of future elections.
As of press time, neither Governor Yusuf nor the NNPP leadership had issued an official response, while residents continued to express concern over the heightened security presence around the Government House.
