Tinubu’s UK Trip Sparks Debate, Presidency Says Visit Will Unlock Investment, Jobs

The Presidency has defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent state visit to the United Kingdom, describing it as a calculated effort to attract foreign investment, boost job creation, and expand economic opportunities for Nigerians.

Special Adviser on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, said the trip is in line with the administration’s broader strategy to reposition Nigeria for sustainable growth through active global engagement.

In a statement posted on his verified X account, Bwala dismissed criticism of the visit, stressing that national development requires outward-looking diplomacy rather than isolation.

“Some people are asking, ‘Why go to the UK?’ You don’t grow and develop Nigeria by sitting at home and waiting,” he said.

According to him, President Tinubu’s engagements in the UK were carefully designed to open new economic pathways, particularly in the areas of foreign direct investment and employment generation.

“This visit is about opening doors—more investment, more jobs, and more opportunities for our people,” Bwala added.

He further noted that the trip has strengthened longstanding bilateral relations between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, with renewed commitments to deepen cooperation in key sectors.

Bwala also highlighted the significance of the reception given to President Tinubu by King Charles III, describing it as a sign of increasing global confidence in Nigeria’s economic direction.

“His Majesty has shown practical commitment to partner with Nigeria in areas of mutual interest and trust,” he said.

He emphasised that the President’s international engagements form part of a deliberate plan to elevate Nigeria’s presence and influence globally.

“President Tinubu is ensuring Nigeria is seen, heard, and respected on the world stage. That’s how progress is made,” Bwala stated.

The Presidency reiterated that sustained diplomatic outreach and global partnerships remain vital to driving Nigeria’s economic ambitions and unlocking new development opportunities.
