Nollywood actress and filmmaker Toyin Abraham has broken her silence following widespread criticism over a viral video showing her kneeling to greet billionaire couple Razaq Okoya and Shade Okoya.
The moment occurred during the 70th birthday celebration of former Ogun State governor Gbenga Daniel, where Abraham was seen going on both knees in a gesture of respect to the couple. The clip quickly made rounds on social media, sparking mixed reactions from fans and observers.
Addressing the backlash, Abraham stood firm in her beliefs, describing herself as a “true Omoluabi” committed to preserving and practicing Yoruba cultural values. She emphasized that her actions were intentional and rooted in respect, not performance.
“I will always uphold our values and culture,” she stated. “I won’t stop kneeling to greet people who deserve it, no matter their status.”
The actress also dismissed claims that such gestures undermine her dignity or public image. According to her, kneeling is a cultural expression of respect and should not be mistaken for subservience or self-devaluation.
However, not all fans were convinced. Some critics argued that the repeated public displays of kneeling, particularly towards individuals they believe are not significantly older than her, may send the wrong message.
One fan, while expressing admiration for Abraham, urged her to project more confidence and self-worth, suggesting that excessive humility could be misinterpreted as “eye service” or unnecessary self-effacement.
Despite the criticism, Abraham appears resolute, making it clear that she will continue to honor her cultural upbringing regardless of public opinion.
