Transport Union Backs Dauda Lawal for Second Term, Hands Over Award of Excellence

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) on Wednesday presented Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State with an Award of Excellence in recognition of his leadership in the state’s transport sector and infrastructure development.

The presentation took place at the Dome Pavilion, Government House, Gusau. The union also formally endorsed the governor for a second term in office.

According to a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the NURTW delegation was led by Board Chairman Dr Najeem Usman Yasin. It included National President Musiliu Akinsanya (popularly known as MC Oluomo) and other senior national officials.

Governor Lawal welcomed the visitors and described the endorsement as evidence of productive collaboration between the state government and the transport sector.

“I am deeply humbled by the two honours bestowed on me today. First, I accept the Award of Excellence as a recognition of our efforts and a pledge to do more. Second, I am grateful for the endorsement for a second term from NURTW, a key grassroots group, which affirms that our policies positively impact ordinary citizens,” he said.

Lawal recalled that his administration had prioritised an efficient and safe transport system as a foundation for economic growth. He cited the distribution of 50 subsidised mass transit vehicles to NURTW members and the renovation of the Zamfara State Council Secretariat as key interventions aimed at improving livelihoods and working conditions for transport workers.

Earlier, Dr Yasin said the union’s leadership had closely monitored the governor’s performance over the past three years.

“We are in Gusau today to appreciate your efforts by presenting you with an Award of Excellence. We feel it is our duty as leaders of the union to find time to come and show the whole world what you have done,” Yasin stated.

He described Lawal as “a gift to Zamfara State,” noting the transformation recorded in three years and pointing ahead to the state’s 30th anniversary of creation on 1 October 2026.

On behalf of the union, Yasin formally endorsed Governor Lawal for re-election in 2027 and called on all NURTW members to support the continuation of the ongoing development programmes.
