Veteran Singer Konga Slams Young Artists for Ignoring Music Legends

Veteran Nigerian singer Konga has criticised the current generation of artists for failing to support industry legends.

Speaking on the Hits Don’t Lie podcast, Konga argued that singer Davido should have used his N200 million birthday donation to assist struggling music legends instead of giving to orphanages. He suggested that such support could have revived the careers of icons like Baba Fryo and Daddy Showkey.

Konga urged contemporary artists to humble themselves and recognise the foundations laid by earlier stars, pointing to international successes of legends such as Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, and Majek Fashek.

He lamented that many pioneers of Nigerian music have been forced to take menial jobs abroad due to lack of support.

“If I were part of Davido’s management, I would have advised him to give part of the funds to all these legends—bring Baba Fryo back, bring Daddy Showkey, give them N5 million each,” Konga said. “Our legends would have dropped comeback hits.

Look at Lord of Ajasa… someone like Olamide will say Wizkid is the greatest internationally. We’ve been touring the world for years.”

Konga stressed that young artists are building on the legacy of these pioneers, whose achievements, though less documented, paved the way for Nigeria’s global music influence.
