Abuja, April 4, 2026 – Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike has sounded a cautionary note for aspiring presidential candidates within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), declaring that the party currently lacks the financial capacity to bankroll any contender for the 2027 general election.
Speaking at his monthly media parley in Abuja on Thursday, Wike emphasized that anyone intending to contest the presidency must realistically assess their personal and financial resources before entering the race.
“As a party, the party does not have money. Even supporters will only back candidates who have a real chance to make an impact,” Wike said.
The former Rivers State governor also dismissed claims that the PDP is factionalized, asserting that the party’s internal challenges are exaggerated. He cited the recent convention in Ibadan as evidence of institutional legitimacy, noting the absence of any INEC objection.
“We have formed a committee to assess our viability in the upcoming presidential election,” Wike said, stressing that it would be irresponsible for aspirants to declare interest without proper structures, preparation, and resources.
On the issue of opposition harassment, Wike rejected narratives portraying the Tinubu administration as targeting rival parties, recalling his own experience under the late Muhammadu Buhari government, where he faced harassment yet prevailed through legal avenues.
“Politics is a game, like football. Differences can be resolved. It is not a do-or-die battle,” he said, urging former party members to rejoin the PDP and contribute to its rebuilding process.
Beyond politics, Wike highlighted his administration’s achievements in the FCT, revealing ongoing infrastructure projects across all six area councils despite the territory receiving only 1% of federal allocations. He reaffirmed his commitment to governance and accountability, inviting scrutiny of every kobo spent on development projects.
“People want infrastructure but do not want to pay taxes. What we are doing is based on what we generate,” Wike said, adding that security has significantly improved under his watch with targeted interventions.
He concluded by challenging politicians to focus on service delivery rather than rhetoric, urging journalists to prioritize questions that advance national progress.
Takeaway:
Wike’s comments highlight the PDP’s financial and structural challenges ahead of 2027, stressing realistic preparation for presidential aspirants, party unity, and governance as key priorities.
