Political tension is escalating in Yobe State following unconfirmed reports that the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Baba Malam Wali, has resigned from his position ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Sources within the state’s political circles suggest that Wali may be preparing to contest for the state’s top seat, as Governor Mai Mala Buni’s tenure is set to conclude in 2027. However, the Yobe State Government has yet to issue any official statement confirming the alleged resignation.
Further fueling speculation, insiders claim Governor Buni may have rejected the resignation, though this remains unverified at press time.
The development has stirred unease within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), where stakeholders are reportedly divided over succession plans and the timing of political alignments.
Wali, regarded as a seasoned technocrat and strategist, is one of the longest-serving SSGs in the state, having served under both the current administration and that of former Governor Ibrahim Gaidam. Political observers believe his potential ambition could significantly reshape Yobe’s political landscape, particularly as he may emerge as a leading contender from Zone C.
Attempts to get official clarification from the state government were unsuccessful, as calls and messages to the governor’s spokesperson went unanswered. Wali has also not publicly addressed the rumours surrounding his resignation or political intentions.
However, a source close to the SSG hinted at his possible governorship bid, stating, “Take it to the bank, oga is going to contest for the governorship seat. I cannot confirm his resignation, but you know what the Electoral Act 2026 says.”
Analysts note that early political maneuvering ahead of elections is common, but the silence from key actors has intensified speculation and uncertainty within the state.
As the situation develops, residents and party loyalists are keenly awaiting official confirmation that could clarify Wali’s status and shape the emerging political contest ahead of 2027.
