Nigerian content creator and streamer Carter Efe has accused social commentator VeryDarkMan (VDM) of attempting to undermine the businesses of Igbo phone sellers by planning to source newly released iPhone 18 devices directly from China.
Speaking during a livestream on Friday, Carter Efe reacted strongly to VDM’s announcement that he intends to purchase the latest iPhones from China and make them available to Nigerians at more affordable prices, bypassing local vendors who often charge inflated rates.
“First of all VDM go do wetin them go take gather am. VDM go do wetin go take make Igbo people gather am kill am for China,” Carter Efe said. He questioned why VDM, who is not previously known for selling phones, was suddenly entering the market. “VDM no dey sell phone o but enter China, he wan go buy phone dey sell. He wan spoil people business,” he added, before asking, “VDM, I never see that kind person before, you be witch?”
The remarks come after VDM shared a video from an Apple Store in China following the iPhone 18 launch. In the video, he stated his readiness to help Nigerians acquire the devices directly, arguing that this approach would spare buyers from paying high markups charged by local sellers.
The exchange has sparked discussions online about competition in Nigeria’s phone market, the role of influencers in retail, and tensions surrounding business opportunities between different groups.
