The National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has drawn a line in the sand regarding potential political alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Addressing a crowd of supporters in Kano on Saturday, January 3, 2026, the former Minister of Defence stated that while the NNPP is open to a merger or coalition, it will not happen unless his personal spot on the ballot is guaranteed.
“We are looking for a party, but they must agree to give me, Rabiu Kwankwaso, a presidential or vice-presidential ticket,” Kwankwaso declared, signaling that his ambition remains non-negotiable.
Pressure from ADC and APC
The statement comes amid intense speculation that Kwankwaso is being courted by two major political blocs:
  1. The ADC Coalition: The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has recently become a magnet for heavyweights, including former Vice President Aliko Dangote, former Anambra Governor Peter Obi, and former Minister Chibuike Amaechi. Insiders suggest Kwankwaso is under pressure to join this “third force,” though his demand for a top ticket may clash with the ambitions of its current members.
  2. The Ruling APC: Sources indicate the All Progressives Congress (APC) is also luring the “Kwankwasiyya” leader to fold his structure into the ruling party to bolster President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.
The 2027 Power Play
Kwankwaso, who finished a distant fourth in the 2023 presidential race, remains a pivotal figure due to his massive cult following in Kano and parts of Northern Nigeria. By demanding a “top-two” slot, Kwankwaso is positioning himself as a kingmaker who refuses to be relegated to a supporting role without a formal title.
Political analysts suggest that his latest stance may complicate negotiations for a united opposition front, especially as other contenders within the ADC and PDP also eye the presidency.
As the 2027 political landscape takes shape, Kwankwaso’s ultimatum serves as a clear warning to potential partners: no ticket, no deal.
