Actress and producer Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has revealed the financial breakdown of her cinema movie, A Mother’s Love, shedding light on how much of the film’s box office earnings ultimately went to its producers.
In a video shared online, Omotola disclosed that A Mother’s Love grossed N103,094,633 during its cinema run.
However, after deductions for exhibitors, distributors, advertising, value-added tax (VAT), entertainment tax, withholding tax and other expenses, only N22 million accrued to the producers.
The actress explained that her first experience handling cinema runs came with several challenges, including the pressure of promoting the movie and maintaining a physical presence in cinemas.
According to Omotola, the film’s cinema run ended on April 19 after she decided to withdraw it because of pressing commitments that made it difficult for her to continue promoting the project.
She said the decision was necessary because leaving the film in cinemas without adequate promotion would have been detrimental to its performance.
Omotola also disclosed that the production company, Red Hot Concepts, had pledged to donate part of the proceeds to charity.
She said the company fulfilled its commitment by donating the proceeds to Slum to School, an organisation focused on supporting children and education.
The actress described the cinema experience as a major learning curve, noting that producers are required to show up and actively support their films during theatrical releases.
Her disclosure has generated discussions about the economics of Nollywood cinema, particularly the difference between a film’s reported box office gross and the amount that eventually reaches producers after taxes, distribution costs and other deductions.
Despite the deductions and challenges surrounding the release, Omotola described the cinema run as a positive experience and highlighted the charitable donation as an important part of the project’s success.
