In a move that has sent shockwaves through the international community, the White House confirmed on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, that President Donald Trump is “actively discussing” the acquisition of Greenland from Denmark.
A Strategic Arctic Power Play
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed that the President’s national security team is currently sketching out what a potential purchase of the autonomous territory would look like. The administration views the move as a critical step in bolstering U.S. national security and deterring growing “Russian and Chinese aggression” in the Arctic region.
“His team is currently talking about what a potential purchase would look like,” Leavitt told reporters, emphasizing that Trump sees the territory as vital to American interests.

In a startling departure from traditional diplomatic rhetoric toward a NATO ally, the White House refused to rule out military action if a purchase agreement cannot be reached.
When questioned on why the President would not take military options off the table against Denmark, Leavitt responded: “That’s not something this president does. All options are always on the table for President Trump. But I will just say, the president’s first option, always, has been diplomacy.”
The announcement has prompted an immediate request for talks from the Danish government. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed on Wednesday that he is scheduled to meet with Danish officials next week to address the mounting tensions.
The proposal mirrors a similar interest expressed by Trump during his first term in 2019, which was flatly rejected by Denmark at the time. However, the 2026 iteration appears more aggressive, with the administration citing the urgent need to protect the Arctic from Eastern influence as a primary justification for the “re-acquisition” attempt.
