Nollywood actress and singer Angela Okorie has spoken publicly about her recent detention at the Suleja Correctional Centre, describing the experience as life-changing and transformative.

Okorie was detained over a cybercrime case involving fellow actress Mercy Johnson. In an emotional post shared on Instagram, she reflected on her time in custody, saying it reshaped her understanding of life, resilience and human dignity.

The actress recently returned to the custodial centre with medical supplies and welfare materials for children born within the facility, highlighting what she described as harsh living conditions and a critical shortage of essential medications.

According to her, one of the most touching aspects of her stay was encountering children born in detention, some to mothers who were already pregnant at the time of their incarceration.

“I want to share a deeply personal experience that has profoundly changed my perspective on life,” she wrote.

“During my recent brief stay at Suleja Correctional Centre, I discovered that such places are not always as harsh and unforgiving as many imagine. My time there taught me invaluable lessons about strength, resilience, hope, and humanity.”

She noted that before her release, she became aware of the pressing need for medications and improved welfare support for children in custody, prompting her decision to intervene.

“For me, giving is not merely an act; it is a way of life. Wherever I go, I strive to leave a positive mark — a footprint of love and kindness,” she added, stressing that the donations were funded from her personal resources and foundation.

Okorie described her detention as a moment of purpose, saying it allowed her to empathise with inmates and better understand their struggles.

“Perhaps my time at Suleja was meant for this: to understand, empathise, and serve. I am grateful that my purpose there has been fulfilled,” she stated.

The actress has since pledged continued support for the children and urged the public to embrace generosity as a lifestyle, noting that giving benefits both the recipient and the giver.

“To everyone reading this, I encourage you to embrace giving as a lifestyle. It changes lives, both those who receive and those who give,” she concluded.
