World-renowned boxer Anthony Joshua was involved in a serious road accident on Monday morning in Makun, Ogun State, along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Eyewitnesses said the crash occurred shortly after 11am, just before Danco Filling Station, near the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound section of the road. Joshua was travelling in a Lexus SUV (KRD 850 HN), which reportedly collided with a stationary truck under circumstances that are still being investigated.
A PUNCH staff member, Adeniyi Orojo, who witnessed the incident, confirmed that Joshua sustained minor injuries, while two occupants of the vehicle died on the spot.
According to Orojo, the convoy consisted of two vehicles—a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV. Joshua was seated at the back of the Lexus, alongside another passenger, while two others occupied the front seats. His security team was in the vehicle behind.
“Other eyewitnesses and I immediately began rescue efforts and flagged down oncoming vehicles for help,” Orojo said. “Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived minutes later. Sadly, the passenger beside the driver and the person seated next to Joshua did not survive.”
Joshua, who was born to British-Nigerian parents, attended boarding school in Ikenne, just a few kilometres from where the accident occurred.
The boxer recently made headlines after defeating Jake Paul in a highly publicised bout in Miami and is expected to face longtime rival Tyson Fury in 2026.
Following news of the crash, fans across social media have expressed concern and support for the heavyweight champion, while **local authorities continue investigations into the cause of the accident.
