The Ogun State Police Command has officially arraigned Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the tragic December 29 accident that claimed the lives of two close associates of boxing icon Anthony Joshua.
Appearing before a Sagamu Magistrate Court on Friday, January 2, 2026, the 46-year-old driver faces legal action following the high-speed crash near Danco along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that the proceedings have been adjourned until January 20, 2026, to allow for further investigations.
The Fatal Incident
The crash occurred just ten days after Joshua’s knockout victory over Jake Paul. The victims, identified as Kevin Latif Ayodele (36) and Sina Ghami (36), were British citizens and integral members of Joshua’s training staff. Both were killed instantly when the vehicle, reportedly traveling well above the 65mph speed limit, suffered a tyre burst and collided with an illegally parked truck on the hard shoulder.
While the nearside of the Lexus was obliterated, Anthony Joshua—who was seated behind the driver—escaped with only minor injuries. Local responders described the former heavyweight champion’s survival as a “miracle.”
Investigation and Recovery
Police sources indicate that Adeniyi, a long-term member of Joshua’s Nigerian logistics team, was taken into custody after being discharged from a Lagos hospital on New Year’s Eve. Authorities are also currently on a manhunt for the driver of the truck involved, who fled the scene following the impact.
The bodies of Ayodele and Ghami were flown to London via Istanbul on New Year’s Day for burial.
Anthony Joshua was discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, on Wednesday and has since visited a funeral home to pay his final respects to his fallen friends.
Governors Dapo Abiodun (Ogun) and Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos) issued a joint statement commiserating with the families and thanking President Bola Tinubu for his support during the crisis.
As the sports world sends condolences—including messages from Super Eagles stars Victor Osimhen and Wilfred Ndidi—all eyes remain on the Sagamu Magistrate Court for the resumption of the trial later this month.
