The Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, has pledged a N1 billion research grant to the newly established Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences, Iyin-Ekiti (FUTES), as the institution formally matriculated 1,563 pioneer students.
Bamidele announced that the fund would be released in tranches of N200 million annually over five years to drive cutting-edge research and position the university as a centre for innovation and technological advancement.
Speaking at the institution’s maiden matriculation ceremony, the lawmaker described research as the backbone of any world-class university and a critical catalyst for national development. He commended President Bola Tinubu for signing the enabling bill establishing the university into law in February 2025, noting that the institution would strengthen Nigeria’s global competitiveness.
The Vice-Chancellor, Gbenga Aribisala, disclosed that the university secured approval for 36 academic programmes across four faculties from the National Universities Commission within its first year of operation.
Aribisala described Bamidele’s intervention as crucial to the smooth take-off of the university, revealing that the senator also provided take-off grants and vehicles to support administrative and academic activities.
He explained that the institution was designed as a fully residential and ICT-compliant university focused on producing graduates equipped to create jobs rather than seek employment.
“The university will not tolerate indiscipline or misconduct. For anyone to earn a degree from this university, such a person must be fit in character and learning,” the Vice-Chancellor stated.
He stressed that the management maintains zero tolerance for drug abuse, sexual harassment, and cultism, adding that dedicated committees have been established to address any cases of misconduct.
While appealing for support from individuals and corporate organisations, Aribisala highlighted pressing infrastructural needs, including laboratories, workshop equipment, buses, a modern library complex, faculty buildings, and hostel accommodation to accelerate development.
Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, represented by his Special Adviser on Tertiary Education, Prof. Mayowa Azeez, congratulated the pioneer students and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to strengthening higher education in Ekiti State.
The Oluyin of Iyin-Ekiti, Adeola Ajakaiye, also expressed delight at the smooth take-off of the university, commending Senator Bamidele for his pivotal role in its establishment. He pledged the full support of the host community, assuring students and management of a peaceful and conducive environment for academic excellence.
