The legal dispute between former Big Brother Naija stars Bella Okagbue and Segun “Sheggz” Olusemo has taken a new turn after Okagbue’s lawyers rejected the defamation allegations against their client and raised fresh claims involving loans and an alleged broken promise to marry.
The development followed a letter dated August 24, 2026, issued by Okagbue’s legal representatives in response to a cease-and-desist notice reportedly sent by lawyers representing Sheggz three days earlier.
Sheggz’s legal team had reportedly accused Okagbue of making statements capable of damaging his reputation and that of his family.
The notice allegedly demanded that the reality star stop publishing or facilitating what his lawyers described as defamatory statements, remove the disputed content and issue a retraction and apology.
However, Okagbue’s lawyers dismissed the allegations as “spurious and baseless”, insisting that her social media posts reflected her genuine feelings and experiences and did not constitute defamatory statements.
The legal response also introduced fresh allegations that had not been at the centre of the initial dispute.
According to reports, Okagbue’s lawyers alleged that Sheggz breached a promise to marry her and misrepresented his intentions during their relationship.
The legal team reportedly described the alleged conduct as deceit and indicated that it was prepared to seek appropriate legal remedies before a competent court.
Okagbue’s representatives also alleged that Sheggz obtained several loans from her under false pretences.
They reportedly stated that evidence was available to support the claim and suggested that further legal proceedings could be pursued.
The allegations, however, remain claims made by Okagbue’s representatives. There is currently no reported court judgment establishing that Sheggz obtained money by false pretence or breached a legally enforceable promise to marry.
How the Dispute Started
The latest legal exchange comes days after Sheggz publicly confirmed that his relationship with Okagbue had ended in January 2026.
In a lengthy statement released on August 19, Sheggz said unresolved issues surrounding trust and respect ultimately made him conclude that the relationship could not lead to marriage.
“I am not an abuser. For clarity, I did not cheat on Bella, and I have been single since January 2026,” he said.
Sheggz also disclosed that he had purchased an engagement ring because he genuinely believed the relationship could eventually lead to marriage.
According to him, attempts were made to reconcile after their separation in January, but the efforts were unsuccessful.
“I genuinely wanted the relationship to work. I even went as far as purchasing a ring because I believed in the possibility of a future together,” he said.
Okagbue later presented a different version of events.
In Instagram posts, the 29-year-old explained that she had remained silent because she believed certain issues were better handled privately.
She stressed that her silence should not be interpreted as an admission of wrongdoing and suggested that the relationship had been marked by unmet promises and expectations.
“I gave love a chance. I gave change a chance. I gave loyalty in abundance,” Okagbue said, according to reports of her statement.
She added that she gave the relationship another opportunity because she believed people could change, but eventually decided to prioritise herself after concluding that trust, respect and peace could no longer coexist within the relationship.
Sheggz’s Defamation Claims
Sheggz’s reported cease-and-desist notice, dated August 21, allegedly accused Okagbue of portraying him as violent or abusive, claiming that he owed her ₦11 million and making disparaging comments about him and members of his family.
His lawyers also reportedly accused her of cyberbullying and warned against further publication of the alleged statements.
Okagbue’s lawyers responded on August 24, rejecting the demands and challenging the basis of the allegations.
It is important to note that a cease-and-desist letter is not a court judgment. The issuance of such a notice does not, on its own, establish that defamation occurred or amount to a court order preventing the recipient from speaking publicly.
Similarly, there is no reported judicial finding establishing the competing allegations involving abuse, infidelity, manipulation or the alleged ₦11 million debt. The claims remain disputed by the parties.
From BBNaija Romance to Legal Dispute
The disagreement has its roots in the high-profile relationship that began during the 2022 Big Brother Naija Level Up season.
Bella and Sheggz became one of the most recognisable couples from the reality show, continuing their relationship after leaving the BBNaija house.
Their romance survived previous breakup rumours, including speculation in 2024 after Okagbue removed photographs involving Sheggz from her Instagram account.
By 2026, however, renewed speculation about the relationship intensified as fans noticed changes in their social media activities.
Sheggz’s August statement eventually confirmed that the relationship had ended months earlier.
Both sides have suggested that marriage had been a serious consideration during their time together. While Sheggz said he bought an engagement ring, Okagbue’s legal representatives have now alleged that a promise to marry her was breached.
The contrasting accounts have further highlighted how differently the former couple now views their relationship and its eventual breakdown.
The dispute has also attracted reactions from fellow reality stars and social media users, with some calling for restraint while others debate the possible legal and financial consequences of the allegations.
For now, neither party has secured a reported judicial determination establishing the allegations made against the other.
